| “All my life I've had one dream, to achieve my many goals.” - Homer Simpson Though this tightly edited portfolio site is intended to make me “look good”, I must own up to the many dreadful photos I passed on in the process of making these selections. It's been said that the path to growth is paved with one's own mistakes. Well if that's the case I've grown a lot over the years. My basic story line is this. I graduated from Stanford University in 1979 with a degree in Communications. For about the next ten years I worked as a newspaper photographer - going from intern to freelancer to staff photographer to freelancer. During this dark period many mistakes were made, but thankfully knowledge was acquired in spite of my stubborn efforts to resist it. For the past 20 some years, or as some would say the “sell out” years, I've worked as a commercial freelance photographer. While I've done a variety of photography over that time the majority of my work has centered on NBA basketball, first in the Bay Area and now in Portland, Oregon. Consciously or not my newspaper background informs much of what I do as a photographer these days. Even though my current task is generally to make the “product” look good, I still find myself guided by the instincts I developed then. Thanks for taking the time to visit!
